Colorado, Washington Voters to Decide Transgender Girls’ Sports Bans
Supporters say the measures would protect fairness in girls’ sports, while opponents warn they could force intrusive medical verification.
Voters in Colorado and Washington will decide on ballot initiatives this November that would prohibit transgender girls from competing in girls' sports, marking the first time such measures have gone directly to the electorate.
Supporters bypassed lawmakers to put the measures on the ballot, hoping to replicate success in 27 states where Republicans have already enacted similar laws despite legislatures previously blocking such bans.
Hedge fund manager Brian Heywood's Let's Go Washington raised more than $7.8 million for the measures, though critics warn the enforcement language requiring healthcare providers to verify "biological sex" would necessitate invasive medical tests.
Nadine Bridges, executive director of One Colorado, argues the bans discriminate against children, while polls show Democratic voters remain divided on whether transgender girls should participate in female sports.
The 2026 ballot questions serve as a testing ground for national policy, as the issue continues to spark intense debate across party lines in reliably Democratic states like Washington and Colorado.
