Tragic Accident Claims Cheetah Cub's Life on Indian Highway | Science-Environment
The male cub was one of two born to a South African cheetah and was killed after wandering onto a highway; 17 cheetahs have died since 2023, officials said.
- On Sunday , a male cheetah cub that ventured out of Kuno National Park died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on a national highway in the Ghatigaon area, police said.
- The nearly 20-month-old cub had ventured out of KNP and got separated from its mother after being released into the wild, and officials said the cubs wandered outside park boundaries nearly a month ago.
- The tracking team said the accident happened suddenly as they tried to intervene, officials detained the vehicle in Kota, Rajasthan, and a Kuno team is en route to question the driver.
- The loss adds to a broader toll, as since 2023 at least 17 cheetahs have died and with this loss Kuno now has 27 cheetahs: eight adults and 19 cubs.
- Project Cheetah, reintroduced in September 2022, is preparing a next phase announced on November 12 that will bring eight cheetahs sourced from Namibia and South Africa, officials said.
