Toyota aims to make all its cars software-defined by 2030, Nikkei reports
Toyota plans to expand Arene to 10 million new vehicles a year, aiming to add over-the-air updates and new features across its lineup.
On Friday, Toyota Motor announced plans to make roughly 50 vehicle models software-defined vehicles by 2030, equipping about 10 million new vehicles annually with its Arene software platform.
The automaker first introduced Arene in its revamped RAV4 sport utility vehicle in 2025, enabling safety and entertainment updates via over-the-air technology after purchase.
Chief technology officer Hiroki Nakajima outlined deployment plans during an investor briefing in Brussels last week, according to a Toyota spokesperson.
Beyond its own fleet, Toyota aims to offer the platform to alliance partners by 2035, expanding the number of vehicles utilizing the proprietary software.
Software-Defined vehicles allow automakers to add autonomous driving and safety features remotely after purchase, eliminating the need for customers to visit dealerships for software upgrades.
