Tourist Mauled by Snow Leopard After Approaching the Wild Animal to Click a Photo in China

The tourist approached within three meters of the snow leopard despite warnings and was bitten in the face; China hosts about 60% of the world’s 4,000 to 6,500 snow leopards.

  • On Jan 23, a female skier was mauled by a snow leopard in Talat Village, Keketuohai Scenic Area, Koktokay Township, Xinjiang, and taken to Fuyun County People's Hospital in stable condition.
  • Area staff had earlier warned visitors that despite these warnings, the tourist reportedly moved closer to get a clearer photo, stopping about three metres away from the snow leopard.
  • The snow leopard then lunged, biting the woman in the face and knocking her down, while a ski instructor and other bystanders used ski poles to scare the animal away and help her to safety.
  • Officials announced intensified safety patrols, protection efforts, and public-awareness campaigns by Fuyun County Forestry and Grassland Bureau and culture and tourism authorities, urging safe distances from wildlife and reporting sightings to local police.
  • Given their rarity, officials emphasize that attacks by snow leopards are extremely rare and China hosts around 60% of the 4,000 to 6,500 worldwide under first-class protection.
