Video Shows Sea Otter Pup Reunited with Mother in Morro Bay
The Marine Mammal Center reunited a threatened southern sea otter pup with its mother after two hours, marking the first such reunion in Morro Bay since 2019, officials said.
- On Oct. 20, a sea otter pup named Caterpillar was reunited with its mother in Morro Bay after two hours of searching, and the Marine Mammal Center shared a video of the reunion.
- Responders played recorded pup cries on a Bluetooth speaker, and Aliah Meza said, `'Vocalizations are very important for pairings of moms and pups, so in this situation we were able to identify the potential mom because of those vocalizations.'`
- Operations Coordinator Shayla Zink and the Morro Bay facility team searched by boat, spotted an adult otter following their vessel, placed Caterpillar into the water after two hours, and monitored bonding for about an hour.
- Reuniting the pup preserved maternal care that improves survival chances, the Marine Mammal Center noted, as southern sea otters remain threatened with their population hovering at 3,000, Meza said.
- The reunion video drew widespread social-media attention and highlights the Marine Mammal Center's rescue work along 600 miles of California coastline.
