Toucan seen flying around Sin City has been rescued
Sam the toucan survived harsh desert conditions for months but showed health decline before being rescued and treated by a local veterinarian, rescue officials said.
- Wednesday, a toucan that had been seen around Las Vegas was captured after flying into a homeowner's garage, SouthWest Exotic Avian Rescue said.
- Sam had been living in Las Vegas since November after escaping his cage, and rescuers warned the desert climate and dietary changes likely harmed him as owners have not been in contact.
- The veterinarian gave Sam fluids and performed bloodwork, and SouthWest Exotic Avian Rescue said he will be quarantined for 30 to 45 days to check for bird flu.
- Birding groups and neighbors had followed Sam's movements, and Skye Marsh said the better food improved his health, adding `I think he was a little bit relieved.`
- Given his reported diet shift from figs and pomegranates to citrus, experts warn that toucans' need for humid environments and specific diets makes Las Vegas unsuitable, said Donald Price.
