Tory MP questions government advisor's position after wife's Palestine Action post
Kearns says the posts raise questions about national security handling as police dropped their inquiry and a Supreme Court appeal looms.
Conservative MP Alicia Kearns challenged the role of National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell following his wife's references to Palestine Action on social media, questioning whether Powell can remain in his post.
Last Thursday, Sarah Helm wrote on X: "God help us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action," responding to a discussion about author Sally Rooney.
The Metropolitan Police investigation concluded Saturday that the post "did not meet the criminal threshold," though support for the proscribed group carries up to 14 years imprisonment.
A Downing Street spokeswoman stated "these views are held by an individual" who does not represent the government, while Kearns told the BBC: "We cannot have the NSA's wife tweeting."
The Supreme Court will hear an appeal against the proscription of Palestine Action next month, a legal battle persisting for more than a year.
