Met Police rules pro-Palestine Action post by Sarah Helm not criminal
The Met said Sarah Helm’s post on Palestine Action did not meet the criminal threshold after a review prompted by a debate over Sally Rooney’s books.
On Saturday, the Metropolitan Police ruled that a social media post by author and journalist Sarah Helm, wife of National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, supporting Palestine Action did not meet the criminal threshold for investigation.
Helm posted the statement Thursday after publisher Faber stopped selling books by Irish novelist Sally Rooney in the UK due to legislation preventing royalty transfers to Palestine Action, proscribed as a terrorist organization since July 2025.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism, a British NGO, called Helm's post "gobsmacking" and demanded she "face the full force of the law," citing more than a dozen prior posts they alleged contained antisemitic tropes.
Downing Street distanced itself from the controversy on Friday, with a government spokesperson stating Helm's comments "did not represent the government in any capacity," while Helm refuted suggestions her support for Palestine Action was antisemitic.
More than 3,500 people have been arrested for alleged support of Palestine Action since the ban, though the group denies terrorism charges, and the Court of Appeal upheld the proscription in June 2026 despite freedom of expression concerns.
