Torrential rain flooded Gaza tents and a baby died of exposure, medics say

Storm Byron destroyed over 27,000 tents and left nearly 800,000 displaced Gazans at risk amid ongoing aid blockades and infrastructure collapse, officials said.

  • On Dec 11, Storm Byron swept the Gaza Strip, flooding hundreds of tents and killing eight-month-old Rahaf Abu Jazar in Khan Younis, relatives and medics said.
  • Municipal and civil defence officials said fuel shortages and damaged infrastructure left responders unable to cope, while materials like timber, sandbags, and pumps were delayed entering Gaza, agencies said.
  • Local civil defence records show 12 people dead or missing, at least 13 buildings collapsed, and more than 27,000 tents destroyed, while the IOM warns nearly 795,000 displaced people face flood risks.
  • UN Relief and Works Agency said flooded streets and soaked tents worsen conditions, while U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned low temperatures and rains place newborns at extreme risk.
  • Although the October ceasefire has partially eased restrictions, the United Nations said supplies remain insufficient as 300,000 tents and mobile homes are blocked while only 15,000 entered.
