Tornado warning lifted in Chatham-Kent

Environment Canada warned of damaging winds, large hail and up to 90 km/h gusts as the storm moved east through the region.

  • On Thursday, Environment Canada issued red tornado warnings across Southwestern Ontario as the Northern Tornadoes Project confirmed an EF0 tornado struck just west of Glencoe, Ontario.
  • Meteorologist Peter Kimbell noted that favorable atmospheric conditions, including high temperatures from afternoon sunshine, increased instability and the risk of severe thunderstorms.
  • With winds reaching 130 km/h, the EF0 tornado left a narrow path of damage to trees and an RV, while resident Amanda Vanderkuyl described the event as a "stressful 10 minutes."
  • Warnings covered Chatham-Kent, Moraviantown, and Rondeau Park; Environment Canada lifted all tornado alerts by 7:50 p.m. Thursday as the storm system moved through the region.
  • A damage survey team will return to the area on Friday to determine the tornado's final rating, length, and maximum width, documenting additional storm impacts.
