‘Positive News’: AFL Icon Awake After Facial Surgery
Mark Ricciuto said Modra is awake after marathon facial surgery and is expected to recover, with fans paying tribute at Adelaide Oval.
Adelaide Crows legend Tony Modra is awake and recovering after undergoing marathon facial surgery on Friday, former teammate Mark Ricciuto confirmed on Saturday.
On Thursday afternoon, a tree branch struck Modra's cattle truck on Range Road near Victor Harbor, causing serious facial and head injuries that required emergency transport to Flinders Medical Centre.
Fans at Adelaide Oval erupted in applause for Modra at the six-minute mark during Saturday's match against Melbourne, while the Crows distributed free tickets to 3,000 first responders.
Ricciuto reported Modra is awake with his wife Erica and their children, expressing gratitude for support, as coach Matthew Nicks emphasized the club's commitment to supporting their recovering hero.
Renowned for his high-flying marks, the former All-Australian kicked 588 goals in 165 games for the Crows and Fremantle, earning the nickname "Godra" and remaining one of the 1990s' most iconic players.
