Kraken Launches US Stock Trading Across European Economic Area

Eligible EEA customers can trade US-listed stocks commission-free alongside more than 600 crypto assets and 700 xStocks, Kraken said.

  • On Tuesday, crypto exchange Kraken launched trading in more than 7,000 US-listed stocks for customers across the European Economic Area under its Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II authorization.

  • The launch places Kraken in direct competition with Interactive Brokers and eToro; as of Monday, xStocks held about $609 million in market capitalization, behind Ondo Finance's $974 million and ahead of Binance's $544 million.
  • "This launch eliminates the artificial divide between traditional and tokenized formats," said Mark Greenberg, chief commercial officer of Payward, as industry players aim to become "super apps" offering diverse asset types.
  • Kraken plans to expand this integrated offering to additional markets in the coming months, while Coinbase U.K. CEO Keith Grose noted convergence is driven by demand: "users want to get more and more of their financial life in a fewer set of places.
