To the editor: Balanced budget amendment is fantasy

Derrick Merrin’s guest column on June 6 blaming the federal deficit on Marcy Kaptur, and claiming the moral high ground on fiscal responsibility for himself needs a fact check. Merrin’s solution to the deficit problem is a balanced budget amendment, which would force politicians to be “responsible stewards” and defund programs that don’t work. He doesn’t tell us what these programs are. Let’s do the math.
