Tinubu’s 30-Day Fuel Discount A ‘Failed Media Stunt’ — Makinde Camp
The campaign said the 30-day cut is too small, limited to NNPC stations and unlikely to ease fuel costs for motorists.
- On Thursday, Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele announced a 30-day fuel discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited stations, prioritizing public transporters nationwide.
- Oyedele also introduced a target N1,350-per-litre ceiling on petrol landing costs, describing the mechanism as price smoothing rather than government subsidy or fixed price control.
- The African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar criticized the proposal as a "desperate, short-term gesture" and "shameless" political bandage failing to address underlying hardship.
- Richard Ihediwa, Director of Strategic Communications for the Daura Presidential Campaign Organization , rejected the measure, calling the "teeny N60" reduction an "offensive and provocative attempt to beguile Nigerians."
- Opposition groups maintained that Nigerians deserve an "impactful reduction" in petrol prices rather than temporary measures, framing the policy as a "deceitful" media stunt ahead of the 2027 elections.
