Timeline of 4 women slain in Winnipeg, searching landfills for their remains
The province says the site is closed after remains were identified, while crews keep searching Brady Road for Ashley Shingoose.
On Thursday, the Manitoba government officially decommissioned the Prairie Green landfill search site after recovering remains of two slain First Nations women.
Public protests in 2023 and political pressure prompted federal and Manitoba governments to pledge $20 million each toward the search, which began in fall 2024.
Justice Glen Joyal convicted serial killer Jeremy Skibicki of four counts of first-degree murder, resolving legal proceedings for victims Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, and Rebecca Contois.
Despite the Prairie Green site closure, police continue searching the city-run Brady Road Resource Management Facility for additional remains, including those of Ashley Shingoose.
The decommissioning marks a transition in the multi-year recovery effort as families and First Nations communities await completion of the Brady Road search.
