Thunderstorms warning issued for parts of England and Wales
Forecasters said the storms could bring flooding, power cuts and train delays as the UK heatwave gives way to unstable air.
On Wednesday, the Met Office issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for North Wales from 3pm until midnight, covering Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire and Wrexham as storms develop this afternoon and evening.
A record-breaking May heatwave prompted the warning after North Wales recorded three consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 25°C, with England's hottest May temperature of 35.1°C recorded at Kew Gardens in London.
Experts warn that torrential downpours, frequent lightning, large hail and strong winds may occur within the warning area, with the Met Office stating there is a "good chance" driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and hail.
Train service delays are possible alongside short-term power loss, with risks including flooding of homes and businesses and lightning damage to buildings and structures across affected regions.
Temperatures are expected to slowly return to normal with largely settled conditions from Friday through Sunday, as the Met Office encourages residents to monitor weather forecasts and prepare emergency kits with torches, batteries and power packs.
