Three meningitis cases discovered among secondary school pupils in Dorset
UKHSA is offering antibiotics and MenB vaccines to pupils after laboratory tests found the three Weymouth cases shared the same sub-strain.
- The UK Health Security Agency is offering antibiotics and Meningitis B vaccines to pupils in years 7 to 13 across Weymouth, Portland, and Chickerell after three cases were confirmed between March 20 and April 15.
- Two affected students attend Budmouth Academy and are known contacts of each other, while the third attends Wey Valley Academy with no confirmed epidemiological link, suggesting the strain may be transmitting more widely among young people.
- Laboratory analysis confirmed this is a different sub-strain than the one detected recently in Kent, and UKHSA emphasized this outbreak is not on the same scale regarding transmission speed or severity as the Kent incident.
- UKHSA Deputy Director Dr. Beth Smout stated, "I'd like to stress that this is an additional precaution," while authorities encourage teenagers to watch for symptoms including fever, headache, and a characteristic rash.
- Anyone experiencing meningococcal symptoms should seek immediate medical attention by calling 999 or using NHS 111, as early treatment can be lifesaving, health authorities said.
