Three killed, four injured in violence in eastern Indian border state
Unidentified gunmen opened fire on 14 Meitei villagers, and the attack revived protests as the state government reviewed security, officials said.
On Oct 19, violence in India's Manipur state left three people dead and four injured after Unidentified armed militants opened fire on 14 Meitei villagers cutting firewood.
The attack targets the Hindu Meitei community, which has engaged in sporadic fighting with the Christian Kuki community since 2023 over economic benefits and job quotas.
Senior police official Lhari Dorjee Lhatoo told reporters, "Three individuals succumbed to bullet injuries. Others sustained injuries and are undergoing further medical treatment," while Meitei groups blame Kuki militants.
Following the violence, locals in Imphal protested by placing two bodies before the residence of Chief Minister Khemchand Singh, who held a security meeting to review the situation.
This incident marks the first reported death in communal violence since the start of the year, as the Chief Minister assesses regional security following months of relative calm.
