Tributes Paid to Three Tourists Killed in Malaga Horror Crash
A fourth Irish person was seriously injured, and emergency crews freed trapped passengers after the collision caused a car to plunge 100 feet, officials said.
Three Irish nationals died and one was seriously injured on Sunday after their vehicle plunged 100 feet down an embankment following a collision on the A-7 motorway near Malaga, Spain.
The incident occurred at 2:38 am near the Cerrado Calderon turn-off on the Almeria-bound stretch when the Irish group's vehicle collided with another car, forcing it through a barrier and down the embankment.
All four victims, aged between 24 and 32, were from Mullingar, Westmeath; the 31-year-old Irish driver remains hospitalized in very serious condition.
Minister Robert Troy, a Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State at the Department of Finance, described the news as "absolutely devastating" after speaking with relatives of those involved.
Civil Guard officers are investigating the crash using onboard computer data to determine vehicle speed, though a spokesman said it is "too early" to identify the cause of the collision.
