Three-Generation Cycling Team Goes for Guinness World Record in Chilliwack
The family rode 204 kilometres and filed Guinness paperwork after finding no known three-generation record in randonneuring.
- On May 23, three generations of the Baker family completed the Flèche Pacifique randonneuring event in Chilliwack. Gary Baker, son Mike Baker, and grandson Ben Baker rode 204 kilometres, seeking a Guinness World Record as the first three-generation team to finish a 'trace' event.
- Gary extensively researched sports literature and found no record of a three-generation team completing a 'trace' event. These rides require specific daylight windows and distances between 201 and 359 kilometres, with no riding permitted between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- The family used three witnesses to track their self-mapped route with five control points. They provided photographic proof and signed time-stamped cards to document their 11.5 hours on the bikes before submitting paperwork to Guinness World Records.
- While the Bakers await a decision in the next three months, Gary noted the experience was about family, not just the record. His grandson Ben recorded a speech for the event banquet, describing it as a wonderful opportunity for quality time.
- Randonneuring is a non-competitive, long-distance cycling sport where finishing within the time limit earns recognition regardless of speed. Participants manage their own food, sleep, and bike repairs, as 'goofy' rules prohibit organizing external help during the ride.
