3 executions scheduled for the same day in Indiana, Florida and Alabama
The cases raise questions about trial fairness and clemency as Florida accounts for 56% of this year’s executions, officials said.
- On Thursday, Indiana, Florida, and Alabama scheduled executions for Jeffrey Weisheit, Jesse Guardado, and Michael Taylor, marking the second time this year three people are set to be put to death on the same day.
- Following distinct legal proceedings, Weisheit was convicted of arson killings in Indiana; Guardado confessed to murder in Florida; and Taylor was sentenced for a robbery-homicide in Alabama 35 years after his crime.
- Advocates note Taylor's youth at the time of his crime and Guardado's history as a victim of the abusive Dozier School, while Weisheit's defense team questions whether the state's drug supplier, Pharmaneek, meets safety standards.
- Governor Mike Braun denied clemency for Weisheit on Monday, November 2, while Governor Ron DeSantis rejected appeals for Guardado; both states proceed despite legal challenges regarding lethal injection drug safety.
- Execution rates in 2025 and 2026 have been roughly double the annual average of the preceding decade, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, despite declining public support for the death penalty.
