Andrew Threatened by Balaclava-Clad Man
Norfolk police said the suspect was detained on suspicion of a public order offence and offensive weapon possession after officers were called to Wolferton.
On Wednesday, a man wearing a balaclava confronted Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor near the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk while he walked his dogs. The former Duke of York fled to his vehicle, and police arrested the suspect for possession of an offensive weapon.
Mountbatten-Windsor relocated to Marsh Farm on the Sandringham Estate last year after losing state-funded police protection in early 2022. He now relies on a private security detail funded by King Charles, though the rural property remains largely open to the public.
Reports indicate the suspect observed the former royal about 50 yards away before exiting his vehicle and shouting. Officers transported him to Kings Lynn Police Investigation Centre for questioning, gathering formal statements from both the duke and his protection officer.
The incident reignited safety concerns for the former prince in the rural location. A source stated the event demonstrates why "security provisions need to be proportionate and properly balanced for an individual with a very high profile."
Former royal protection head Dai Davies noted that public figures attract unwanted attention from fixated individuals. The former duke remains under investigation for alleged misconduct in public office following revelations in the Epstein Files, which led to his relinquishing royal titles.
