Cruise ship heading for the Bahamas rerouted to Nova Scotia instead
About 5,000 passengers aboard the Oasis of the Seas will spend 24 hours in Halifax after unsafe sea conditions forced the Caribbean itinerary change.
On Tuesday, the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas diverted from its Florida and Bahamas itinerary to Halifax, Nova Scotia, carrying 5,000 passengers to port instead of their intended tropical destination.
Subtropical Storm Josephine prompted the itinerary swap after the ship left Cape Liberty, New Jersey, on Sunday, as a storm system off the U.S. Eastern Seaboard forced the unexpected course change.
Passengers will spend 24 hours of their seven-day cruise in Halifax, where tour operator Giacomo Bruno of Ambassatours Gray Line is offering excursions including the Harbour Hopper Tour and trips to Peggy's Cove.
Some travelers faced disappointment, including a family unable to scatter a late father's ashes in the Bahamas as planned aboard the 362-metre vessel.
Environment Canada issued rainfall and wind warnings for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland through Friday, while the cruise is scheduled to return on Sunday with an unclear next destination.
