Thousands of Students, Workers Protest in Italy Under Heavy Security
The action follows weeks of student-led protests and union demands for higher wages, more school funding and lower living costs.
- On Friday, October 30, 2026, thousands of students, workers, and pensioners staged a nationwide general strike across more than 50 Italian cities, led by the USB trade union demanding relief from soaring living costs and education cuts.
- Weeks of student-led school occupations fueled the mobilisation as protesters denounced Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's rearmament policies and demanded more education funding, claiming the government is "totally disconnected" from young people's needs.
- Demonstrations drew at least 20,000 people in Rome and around 15,000 in Genoa, where port workers protested against arms shipments; participants also rallied in Bologna, Naples, and Turin voicing frustration over economic priorities.
- Heavy police deployments occurred in Turin, where minor clashes were reported as the Interior Ministry monitored for potential infiltration; the government recently toughened laws on public gatherings, citing security concerns.
- A Milan transport strike is scheduled for November 13 and a nationwide CGIL general strike is set for November 20, as industrial unrest extends through November with unions pressing for structural economic relief.
