2 drug combination lowers cholesterol better than just a statin, researchers say

  • A meta-analysis of 14 studies involving 108,353 patients, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings and conducted in London, England, found that patients with blocked arteries or at high risk of cardiovascular events benefit from immediate treatment with a combination of a statin and ezetimibe rather than statins alone.
  • High LDL-C levels contribute to 4.5 million deaths worldwide annually and cardiovascular disease accounts for approximately 20 million deaths, especially in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatment strategies.
  • The combination therapy of ezetimibe with a high-dose statin significantly reduced LDL-C levels by an extra 13mg/dL from baseline, increased the chances of reaching the ideal LDL-C goal of less than 70mg/dL by 85%, and resulted in a 19% reduction in the risk of death from any cause compared to high doses of statins alone.
  • According to Professor Peter Toth, a co-author of the study, this research supports the immediate use of combined cholesterol-lowering therapy as the gold standard for high-risk patients post-cardiovascular events, emphasizing the importance of early and sustained LDL-C reduction, and does not require additional funding.
  • The study, led by Maciej Banach, indicates that widespread implementation of statin and ezetimibe combination therapy could prevent thousands of deaths annually, with estimates suggesting nearly 50,000 preventable deaths in the U.S. And over 330,000 globally, while also showing a 44% reduction in therapy discontinuation compared to high-dose statins alone, though limitations relate to the types of studies included in the meta-analysis.
