Dresden City Centre Cleared to Defuse Unexploded WWII Bomb
- On Wednesday, officials in Dresden evacuated around 18,000 people after discovering a 250-kilogram British explosive near the Carola Bridge, the largest such operation in the city.
- During reconstruction of the Carola Bridge after its September 2024 partial collapse, workers found the ordnance amid previous discoveries including four bombs found last year and January and August 2025 bomb finds.
- The 1,000-meter evacuation zone covers the Frauenkirche, Semperoper, police headquarters and Saxon state parliament, while more than 400 police and emergency services secured the area and a shelter opens at the Dresden Exhibition Centre from 7 a.m.
- Bomb experts will attempt to defuse the device and police spokesman Marko Laske said the damaged detonator requires a water jet cutter, which will 'naturally delay' the operation, with on-site detonation as a contingency.
- The incident fits a pattern of repeated wartime-ordnance discoveries, as January and August 2025 finds and last year's evacuation of 17,000 followed Dresden's heavy bombing on 13 and 14 February 1945 killing up to 25,000 and destroying around 90% of the city centre.
