Rare Comet May Be Visible in UK Skies This Week
Comet Lemmon will pass within 56 million miles and reach naked-eye visibility, creating a rare double comet event alongside Comet SWAN, NASA said.

- Discovered on Jan. 3, 2025, by the Mount Lemmon Survey using a 60-inch telescope, Comet Lemmon has an orbital period of about 1,350 years, shortening to about 1,150 after this pass.
- Astrophotographers captured images showing the comet's disrupted tail after solar gusts, while observers note a green coma and thin tail as Comet Lemmon speeds at 135,000 miles per hour.
- Comet SWAN accompanies Lemmon as a brighter neighbor at roughly 24 million miles, and both comets peak in brightness Oct. 20–21 with the new moon Oct. 21 aiding viewing in Asheville, Western North Carolina.
