NHL Players Will Complete at Olympics, Says International Ice Hockey Chief
The International Ice Hockey Federation confirmed NHL players will participate after successful rink testing reassured officials, with 33 games set at the Milano Santagiulia Arena.
- On Sunday Luc Tardif, International Ice Hockey Federation president, said stars from the North American National Hockey League will play in the Winter Olympics and the men's tournament puck drops on February 11.
- Construction delays forced organisers to move the original test event, and Bill Daly, deputy commissioner of the NHL, questioned the rink's quality as recently as last month.
- The weekend featured domestic league and cup matches to test the arena, including three games in a day; a small hole briefly stopped Friday's first match, yet Milan-Cortina CEO Andrea Varnier called player reaction `very positive` and Luc Tardif said the rink held up well.
- To fit media and delegations, organizers cut sellable tickets to three, and Christophe Dubi praised the work, saying `Anyone involved here, hats off,` said Dubi, while noting decoration may not be complete before February 5.
- The venue is one of the few entirely new Olympic sites, with the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena hosting events across the Olympics .
