FACT FOCUS: Images of NYC Mayor with Jeffrey Epstein Are AI-Generated. Here's How We Know
- On Monday, multiple AI-generated photos falsely showed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a child with filmmaker Mira Nair alongside Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and others.
- After a Justice Department release on Friday, the images originated on a parody X account that describes itself as an AI-powered meme engine and appeared following an email from publicist Peggy Siegal about a 2009 afterparty.
- Google's Gemini app found SynthID digital watermarks in all images, showing they were AI-created or edited, and a parody X account admitted, `I purposely made him a baby which would technically make this pic 34 years old.`
- The images spawned online falsehoods, including one falsely claiming Epstein is Mamdani's father, while the NYC Mayor's Office did not respond and AP Fact Check debunked the posts.
- A document photographed Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026 shows Epstein's custody report, recording Mamdani as 18 in 2009, with no victims accusing Clinton, Gates, or Bezos.
