Louvre Heist: What to Know About Brazen Daylight Theft

Four thieves stole eight historic jewels during a security strike at the Louvre, exploiting insufficient staffing and missing CCTV cameras, officials said.

  • On Monday, the Louvre Museum remained closed after four thieves removed eight historic pieces including a royal sapphire necklace, a royal emerald necklace with matching earrings and Empress Eugénie's diadem from the Apollo Gallery.
  • Security officers walked out over staffing and systems, briefly closing parts of the museum and creating a vulnerability before the theft.
  • Alarms sounded but the jewels had been removed before security arrived; Empress Eugénie's diadem is gold with 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds, and the empress's crown was dropped and damaged.
  • President Emmanuel Macron pledged the thieves would be captured while Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said `we have failed` and compared the loss to the Notre-Dame fire.
  • Art Recovery International CEO Chris Marinello warned thieves may dismantle the stolen jewels, while Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez called the pieces sentimental and `priceless`.
