Wander Franco criminally responsible for abuse, judge finds, but spared punishment in Dominican case
The judge cited extortion and blackmail in exempting the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop from punishment, with full sentencing set for June 16.
Former All-Star shortstop Wander Franco was found guilty of sexual and psychological abuse of a 14-year-old girl on Monday by a three-judge panel in the Dominican Republic but will not serve prison time.
Franco's trajectory shifted after Dominican authorities announced an investigation in August 2023; he was arrested in January 2024 following accusations of a four-month relationship with the girl and transferring thousands of dollars to her mother.
Judge José Antonio Núñez determined Franco was a victim of extortion and blackmail by the girl's mother, who was convicted twice of trafficking her daughter and received 10-year sentences both times.
Despite the prison exemption, Franco remains convicted of moral turpitude, which bars him from obtaining a USA work visa and keeps him on MLB's restricted list as the league concludes its investigation.
The court will issue full sentencing details on June 16, but Franco's MLB future appears blocked by the moral turpitude conviction despite the judicial pardon exempting him from prison.
