Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz Start US Open Mixed Doubles vs. Team with Women's Doubles Champ
The mixed doubles draw was revamped to attract singles stars, and the winners will share $1 million, officials said.
On Tuesday, Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz debut in the US Open mixed doubles tournament, facing Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool in the first round after receiving a wild card Saturday.
The Tennis Association overhauled the event last year to attract top singles players with a $1 million prize, which effectively excluded traditional doubles specialists from competing.
Routliffe and Glasspool secured their main draw spot through the qualifying tournament, winning two matches that both required tiebreakers to advance.
The first round and quarterfinals occur today, Tuesday, while semifinals and the final are scheduled for Wednesday, with the winning team claiming $1 million.
Top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic earned their position based on combined singles rankings and face Leylah Fernandez and Frances Tiafoe in their first match.
The two athletes, who have Nike as their main sponsor, combine to add up to 30 individual "big" titles. On the way they could cross with Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka.
