The US Navy Added 100 Feet to Seawolf-Class Nuclear Submarine USS Jimmy Carter and Has Never Said What’s Inside. It Is Now Spending $5.1 Billion to Build a Replacement.
USS Jimmy Carter measures 453 feet against the 353 of her two Seawolf-class sisters. The difference is a 100-foot section inserted amidships during construction, the Multi-Mission Platform, and in twenty years the Navy has never publicly described what happens inside it. It is now procuring a one-off Modified Virginia-class boat, estimated at $5.1 billion, explicitly to augment or succeed her.
