The Reject Shops Gets a Revamp Under a New Name
Dollarama plans to rebrand 395 Reject Shop stores by 2027, simplifying pricing and aiming to nearly double Australian store count by 2034 to boost market share.
- Last month Dollarama completed its $233.6 million purchase of The Reject Shop, taking over the chain's 390-plus stores and planning to phase out the brand.
- To expand market share, Dollarama aims to grow to 700 stores from 395 and simplify pricing, focusing on items 'for $5 or less' to challenge Kmart, Big W and Target.
- The rollout will be gradual and Neil Rossy, Dollarama chief executive, said last week that four conversions are already underway, aiming to convert all Reject Shop stores to Dollaramas by 2026/27.
- Landlords should expect significant investment as commercial landlords remodel former Reject Shop sites, while Australian consumers stand to benefit from cheaper options and a broader product range, UNSW researcher Professor Nitika Garg said.
- Rossy framed the move as international expansion saying, `Expanding our international reach supports our long-term growth strategy, and we are thrilled to be embarking on this exciting new chapter with TRS's local leaders and more than 5000 employees,` boosting Dollarama's footprint to over 1,600 stores globally.
