'The Railyards:' New renderings show proposal for riverfront Chicago White Sox stadium
- On Saturday, Canal Edge revealed plans for 'The Railyards,' a 47-acre mixed-use development along the Chicago River that could become the Chicago White Sox's next home once their Rate Field lease expires.
- Controlling shareholder Justin Ishbia, who holds an option to acquire the franchise by 2034, placed the South Loop rail yard under contract earlier this year to anchor the mixed-use project.
- Beyond the stadium, the proposal includes an outpatient care center for Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, though the project remains in early stages while undergoing environmental and transportation feasibility studies.
- Ishbia met with Mayor Brandon Johnson on Friday to brief the city, though the plan faces community opposition from the 11th Ward and Nicole Lee regarding relocating an Amtrak facility to Bridgeport.
- The development, which Ishbia intends to finance privately, joins other potential sites like 'The 78' under consideration as the White Sox evaluate options for a new venue after their 2029 lease expiration.
