New images reveal extent of looting at Sudan’s national museum as rooms stripped of treasures

Footage of the interior of the Sudanese National Museum, which was taken over by the Sudanese army from the Rapid Support Force (RSF) militia, has been circulating on social media. The footage shows a massive looting of antiquities.

After three years of RSF occupation, Jamal Mohamed Zein Elabdeen was one of the first employees of the Ministry of Culture to have been able to visit the National Museum of Sudan. The vault that housed treasures was looted.

On Tuesday, the Sudanese government accused the Rapid Support Forces of destroying and looting the collections of the Sudanese National Museum, which documents the history and civilization of seven thousand years, stressing its continued coordination with UNESCO, Interpol and international organizations concerned with the protection of heritage in order to recover looted cultural property and hold those responsible for these crimes accountable.
