Pittsburgh Zoo Announces the Birth of Brand-New Lion Cub
The cub is doing well and will remain with Scarlett in a maternity den until she is ready to join the pride.
On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium announced the birth of a female African lion cub born April 5. The newborn is currently residing in a quiet maternity den with her mother, Scarlett.
The cub is the first offspring for nine-year-old parents Scarlett and Hondo, who arrived at the zoo less than a year ago from the Idaho Falls Zoo to join the breeding program.
"The cub is doing great and exceeding milestones," said Assistant Curator of Mammals Karen Vacco. Animal care staff are actively monitoring nursing patterns and normal maternal behavior.
The facility plans to share development updates on social media throughout the summer before the cub makes her public debut in late summer, pending demonstration of necessary mobility skills.
This birth supports the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Lion Species Survival Plan, a nationwide effort ensuring genetic diversity for African lions considered vulnerable in the wild due to habitat loss.
