Japanese national detained in Iran last year has been released, Japan’s foreign minister says

One Japanese detainee held since June 2025 was released after completing their jail term, while efforts continue for the early release of the second detainee, Japan's foreign minister said.

  • Japan's Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said one of two Japanese nationals detained in Iran has been released and will be returning to Japan, announcing this on a Fuji Television talk show.
  • Motegi said the released person had been detained since last year and was freed on Wednesday, and Japanese media reported the individual was taken into custody in June while Jiji Press said Iran released the person after deciding the jail term was over.
  • The Committee to Protect Journalists said the NHK journalist was arrested Jan. 20 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and transferred Feb. 23 to Evin Prison.
  • Diplomatic pressure included Motegi's 'strong calls' to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and he confirmed the other Japanese national remains detained while 'staying in touch with the person's family'.
  • The Foreign Ministry gave no further details such as whether the two cases were related, and Motegi did not identify either person, leaving unresolved questions.
