The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) reinforces the myth of the Master of Cabestany and the legend of Sant Pere de Rodes to continue investigating this unclassifiable Romanesque artist, for some a true Picasso of the 12th century, and recovering fragments of the lost marble cover of Sant Pere de Rodes, in Port de la Selva (Girona), a work built between 1160 and 1170, with elements reminiscent of Roman art.
“The Picasso of the 12th century”, as Manuel Castineiras, a great expert in history and medieval art, baptized the Master of Cabestany, a fascinating and “disturbing” artist for his originality and modernity, who worked between Tuscany, Midi, Catalonia and Navarre, and whose masterpiece, the marble cover of Sant Pere de Rodes, vandalized in the 19th century, is scattered in a thousand pieces.
