Democrats eye Wisconsin Republican incumbent as congressional map expands in hopes of a blue wave
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added the seat to its target list as Republicans have held it for more than 30 years.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced in September it is adding Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District to its "red to blue" program, targeting incumbent Republican Rep. Bryan Steil and boosting Democratic challenger Mitchell Berman.
Republicans have held this district for more than 30 years, but Berman seeks to capitalize on voter anger over the economy, healthcare costs, and high gas prices caused by the war in Iran.
Steil and supporting groups have outspent Berman by a 2-1 ratio; Steil entered August with $6.3 million cash on hand compared to Berman's just under $152,000, according to federal filings.
Downplaying the challenge, Steil described the race as a "contrast election" where his values align with southeast Wisconsin, citing support for eliminating taxes on tips and overtime as key work.
Despite the Democratic push, observers note Berman faces a difficult path against a popular incumbent; Steil has won all four races by at least 9 percentage points and maintains strong name recognition.
