Republicans lost several congressional seats they redrew
Democrats held or flipped most targeted seats as Republicans fell short of the five-seat gain they sought from the new map.
Texas Republicans' 2025 effort to redraw congressional maps backfired during Tuesday's midterms, with the party on course to win only one of the five districts it targeted for a flip.
Urged by President Donald Trump, the GOP-controlled Texas Legislature redrew boundaries last year, banking on 2024 Latino voter gains to preserve the party's slim House majority.
"The polling was pretty clear from a year ago that many Latinos regretted voting for Donald Trump," University of Houston professor Brandon Rottinghaus said, explaining how voters swung back to Democrats.
Democrats secured key victories, including Leticia Gutierrez in the 9th District and Katy Padilla Stout in the 23rd, while incumbents Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez retained their South Texas seats.
This failed Texas effort sparked a broader, nationwide redistricting war, with similar map-drawing attempts in Florida also failing to prevent a Democratic surge that handed the party control of the U.S. House.
