Democrat David Crowley Wins Wisconsin Governor’s Race, Becomes State’s First Black Governor
Crowley defeated Tom Tiffany after a turbulent campaign and a late Evers endorsement, giving Democrats continued control of the governor’s office.
On Tuesday, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley defeated Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in the Wisconsin governor's race, becoming the state's first Black governor.
Crowley's campaign overcame a tumultuous primary after he suspended his bid in July, relaunching 10 days later with backing from Gov. Tony Evers to defeat democratic socialist Francesca Hong.
Raised in a poor Milwaukee neighborhood, Crowley ran on affordability, proposing to expand Medicaid and overturn Act 10, the 15-year-old state law that restricted collective bargaining rights for public workers.
The victory keeps the governor's office under Democratic control for the first time in more than eight consecutive years, marking a significant party milestone in Wisconsin politics.
Crowley now faces a divided government; Democrats have not held full control of state government since 2010, forcing him to navigate legislative hurdles while addressing voter concerns about his tax proposals.
