Jacob Bethell Sidelined From The Hundred
Jacob Bethell will miss The Hundred after failing to recover from a knee injury, and Birmingham Phoenix have turned to Donovan Ferreira as captain.
England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of The Hundred after sustaining a knee injury during the recent ODI series against India. The 22-year-old was set to captain Birmingham Phoenix but will now undergo rehabilitation with the ECB medical team.
Bethell sustained the knee injury during the recent ODI series against India, where he had been in strong form. He scored 91 in the series decider and made 74 in his last red-ball outing at Trent Bridge against New Zealand.
South Africa all-rounder Donovan Ferreira replaces Bethell as Birmingham Phoenix captain. Head coach Shane Bond said the team is "gutted he won't be able to join us this year" but fortunate to have Ferreira's stature to lead.
Bethell's injury leaves him in doubt for England's upcoming Test series against Pakistan in August. He awaits further assessment to determine the severity of the knee problem over the coming weeks.
Birmingham Phoenix begins their campaign against the Trent Rockets on Friday with a player replacement to be announced. Bethell will continue his recovery under ECB guidance as the franchise pursues The Hundred title.
