Gotthard traffic queue hits 11km at start of holiday season
The start of the summer holidays saw a long traffic jam in front of the Gotthard tunnel on Saturday. Traffic jams between Erstfeld and Göschenen in canton Uri were up to 11 kilometres long early in the morning.
Already in the early morning, the vehicles pile up to eleven kilometres between Erstfeld and Göschenen.
While holiday departures caused traffic jams of up to 11 km at the northern entrance to the Gotthard on Saturday, the queue on Sunday was barely reduced, to 10 km shortly before 4:00 p.m. This represents a wait of up to 1 hour and 40 minutes.
On Saturday, the departures on holiday caused a long traffic jam in front of the Gotthard tunnel, a period that required increased vigilance for relief. The safety system has been considerably strengthened since the tragedy of 2001, when 11 people had died as a result of a collision between two trucks.
