EU expands sanctions against Belarus over political oppression

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union's member states announced on Thursday sanctions on a further 25 individuals and seven entities over what the EU said was the undermining of democracy and rule of law in Belarus.

The European Union has imposed sanctions on 32 individuals and entities for their participation in the repressive spiral of President Alexander Lukashenko's regime in Belarus, a step by which the bloc extends its 'black list' to 310 people and 46 entities.

Alexander Lukashenko already mentioned 18 years ago that his son Nikolai would replace him. According to the Belarusian political scientist, it is too early for this, but the former Belarusian ambassador to Poland indicates that anything can still happen.

The inauguration of Alexander Lukashenko on March 25, Freedom Day, once again confirmed that there are two Belaruss with different identities. Svaboda political observer Valer Karbalevich sums up the week.
