Top Seed Sabalenka Falls At First Hurdle in Wuhan Open
On Wednesday, Belarusian top seed Aryna Sabalenka was eliminated from the Wuhan Open, losing 3-6 6-4 7-6 to unseeded American Ann Li in the round of 32.
The defeat extends a barren spell for the 28-year-old, who has not lifted a trophy since completing the 'Sunshine Double' at Indian Wells and Miami earlier this year.
Sabalenka committed 44 unforced errors compared to Li's 28, and despite saving nine match points, she could not save a 10th to stay in the match.
Earlier on Wednesday, American second seed Jessica Pegula also suffered an early exit, falling 2-6 7-6 6-3 to former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.
These results follow a surprise defeat to Czech rising star Nikola Bartunkova at the China Open last week, ensuring Sabalenka finishes the season without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2022.
