Zverev Defies 'Physical Issues' to Reach Shanghai Masters Quarter-Finals
Zverev saved three set points and won his first match since clinching the year-end No. 1 ranking.
On Tuesday, Alexander Zverev defeated Alexander Bublik 7-6 , 4-6, 7-6 to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals in his first match since securing the year-end number one ranking.
Zverev clinched the year-end number one ranking Monday after third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz lost to Zizou Bergs in Shanghai. He will officially overtake top-ranked Jannik Sinner next month after the Italian ended his season due to right knee inflammation.
Bublik led 20-15 in aces but committed eight double faults to Zverev's one. Zverev saved three set points in the opening tiebreaker and noted, "My ankle was acting up unfortunately again," during the match.
Zverev will next face Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals, who defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4 to advance. De Minaur has won their last two meetings, both at the Laver Cup.
Elsewhere, 56th-ranked Arthur Gea defeated Jakub Mensik 7-6 , 6-4 to remain in contention. Zverev won the French Open and U.S. Open this year for his first two Grand Slam titles.
