Paul Giamatti Pushes Julianne Moore to Her Limit in 'The Debut'
The R-rated musical comedy follows a shy housewife who becomes a method actor and clashes with a domineering theater director, A24 said.
A24 unveiled the first trailer for The Debut, an R-rated musical comedy directed by Jesse Eisenberg and starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti.
The film centers on Mona Friedman, who transforms from a shy housewife into a zealous method actor after landing a role at a New Jersey community theater, where she clashes with domineering director Jerry.
Seemingly akin to Whiplash for the community theater world, the trailer features Halle Bailey's character telling Mona, "Every single thing you are doing is not working," while pushing her toward greatness.
The Debut reunites Eisenberg with Topic Studios and Fruit Tree, while the supporting cast includes Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, Eldar Isgandarov, and Bernadette Peters rounding out the community theater troupe.
Searchlight acquired worldwide rights at Sundance, where Eisenberg won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and the dramedy arrives almost two years after his A24-released When You Finish Saving the World.
