Rijkswaterstaat (the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management) is deeply concerned about the Dutch infrastructure. Roads, waterways, bridges, and locks are increasingly damaged and worn out. The infrastructure is "the backbone of our society and economy," says director Martin Wijnen, and he believes more funding is needed to keep it safe.
