The European Commission is proposing that the EU's next long-term budget will be 2,000 billion euros. The proposal includes a 400 billion euro crisis mechanism and a series of new taxes. The state of research and agriculture is a concern for MEPs.
"A substantial increase in the EU budget is unacceptable" at a time when all member states are trying to rationalize their national ones, Germany believes.
According to the Commission President, the budget is intended to meet future challenges.
